Vacations in Europe can offer Christians with many exciting and spiritually uplifting experiences.
Some of the most beautiful pilgrim tours locations can be found in Spain. In this article we will explore a few of the most famous Christian sites in Spain.
Montserrat Shrine This is truly one of the most beautiful and popular pilgrimage locations in Europe. The Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat is located on a mountain close to Barcelona. More than two and a half million visitors come to see the shrine and the statue of the black madonna each and every year. It is said that when the bishop of Manresa wanted to move the statue to Manresa, it became so incredibly heavy that it could not be moved and that is how the Virgin indicated that she wants to remain in Montserrat.
Sagrada Familia Basilica The Sagrada Familia basilica is not only a major Christian location, but also one of the most famous architectural landmarks in the world. The unfinished basilica was designed by Antoni Gaudi. Amazingly, the basilica is still a work in progress. Gaudi began to work on the basilica in 1882 and two years later took over and became the lead architect. Gaudi worked on the site for over 40 years and actually lived in a workshop located there. However, the basilica remained unfinished at the time of his death. Work slowly continues on the Basilica to this day.
Basilica de la Macarena Located in Seville, the Basilica de la Macarena contains one of the most famous images in Seville, which is called the Virgin of Hope. La Macarena is a saint that is well loved by the Spanish gypsy community and is also the patron saint of matadors.
The statue is thought to be the work of the sculpture Pedro Roldan and was created sometime in the seventeenth century. A famous local matador, Joselito, bought four emeralds for the statue and when he died in the ring it was dressed as a widow for an entire month.
